Central Philippine University reinforces its environmental stewardship through the adoption of new guidelines on non-biodegradable plastic and Styrofoam use.
In line with its ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship, Central Philippine University (CPU) has officially adopted new campus-wide guidelines regulating the use of non-biodegradable plastic and styrofoam. These measures will take effect starting the first semester of School Year 2025–2026.
Outlined in Memo No. 87, dated July 17, 2025, and issued by the Office of the President, the guidelines were signed by Dr. Esther Rose A. Romarate, Vice President for Student Affairs and Officer-in-Charge Office of the President. The document aims to promote responsible consumption and reduce plastic pollution within the university premises.
The newly released Guidelines on the Use of Non-Biodegradable Plastic and Styrofoam in the University Campus emphasize nine key areas:
1. Prohibition of Styrofoam: The use of Styrofoam (polystyrene) containers for food and beverages is strictly prohibited at all university meetings, official functions, and gatherings.
2. Minimization of Single-Use Non-Biodegradable Plastics: The use of single-use non-biodegradable plastic items such as bottled water, plastic cups, straws, utensils, bags, and food containers is strongly discouraged.
3. Promotion of Reusable Alternatives: Attendees are encouraged to bring and use reusable items such as tumblers, food containers, cups, and utensils. University departments are advised to maintain sets of reusable dining ware for meetings and events.
4. Sustainable Catering Practices: All food service providers and event caterers must adhere to the following standards:
• Use biodegradable or compostable containers.
• Prefer paper-based or recyclable packaging.
• Supply reusable or sustainable utensils, where feasible.
5. Water Dispenser Policy: During events, bottled water should not be served. Instead, organizers shall provide water dispensers and encourage attendees to bring their own tumblers.
6. Waste Segregation: Event venues must be equipped with clearly labeled waste bins to facilitate proper segregation and recycling of waste materials.
7. Communication and Education: Event organizers are responsible for informing participants in advance about the guidelines on plastic and Styrofoam reduction.
8. Monitoring and Compliance: A designated committee or staff member will oversee the implementation of these guidelines during events and provide periodic assessments and recommendations.
9. Recognition and Incentives: Offices or individuals demonstrating exemplary adherence to sustainable event practices may be acknowledged through university-wide commendations or incentives.
According to the memorandum, the initiative reflects CPU’s alignment with national efforts to mitigate the harmful impact of single-use plastics and supports the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12 on responsible consumption and production.
The guidelines are expected to be followed by all university stakeholders including personnel, students, student organizations, service providers, and campus visitors participating in meetings or events within CPU grounds.
This proactive move emphasizes CPU’s role in fostering environmental responsibility across its academic community. The administration encourages everyone to cooperate in preserving a greener, more sustainable campus environment.
