Centralians from the CPU College of Engineering proudly advance to the Regional Level of the 29th Philippine Statistics Quiz after excelling in the Iloilo Provincial Elimination held on October 24, 2025, at Smallville 21 Hotel, Iloilo City.

Three representatives from Central Philippine University (CPU) College of Engineering (COE) joined the 29th Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) – Iloilo Provincial Elimination held on October 24, 2025, at Twin Ballroom A, Smallville 21 Hotel, Mandurriao, Iloilo City.

Among 62 contestants from 21 Higher Education Institutions, Manuel Antonio E. Treñas of Packaging Engineering was named Champion, Xanth Reign Z. Palmes of Software Engineering placed 3rd, and Dwayne Michael Bersusa of Electrical Engineering was also in the 3rd and last round of only 19 students who qualified.

The team was coached by College of Engineering faculty members, Mr. Anfernee Joan Ng and Engr. Marian Mie Alimo-ot, who guided the participants throughout their preparation and training for the competition.

Treñas described his win as “surreal,” admitting he had not expected to advance, much less take home the championship. “I did not expect to qualify for the final round, let alone win,” Treñas shared. “The main contributors to my win are the teachers who taught and helped me to review in Statistics, the friends and family who believed in me and encouraged me to join, and to God Almighty for His forever guidance and blessings throughout this journey,” he expressed.

“With the event being situated right after my midterms, I was strapped for time reviewing my subjects,” Palmes said. He described the experience as both nerve-wracking and fulfilling, noting that it was his first time joining a quiz bee and that he had limited time to prepare due to midterm exams.

Moreover, Bersusa highlighted that despite the short review period, teamwork and communication kept the group composed and focused throughout the competition.

Organized by Philippine Statistic Authority – Iloilo Provincial Statistical Office, PSQ promotes statistical literacy among college freshmen and highlights the role of data in informed decision-making.

Treñas and Palmes will represent Iloilo in the Regional Finals on November 6, 2025, competing against other provincial qualifiers from Western Visayas.
