Centralians bag awards in the 29th Philippine Statistics Quiz – Western Visayas Regional Championship

Centralians excelled in the Regional Championship of the 29th Philippine Statistics Quiz – Western Visayas, held on November 6, 2025, at District 21 Hotel, Iloilo City.

Xanth Reign Z. Palmes, a first-year Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering student, was named Champion, while Manuel Antonio E. Treñas, a first-year Bachelor of Science in Packaging Engineering student, secured the 2nd Runner-Up spot in the competition.

Before advancing to the regional level, three CPU students excelled in the 29th Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) – Iloilo Provincial Elimination, held on October 24, 2025, at Twin Ballroom A, Smallville 21 Hotel, Mandurriao, Iloilo City. Among 62 contestants from 21 Higher Education Institutions, Treñas was named Champion, Palmes placed 3rd, and Dwayne Michael Bersusa of Electrical Engineering advanced to the third and final round, which included only 19 qualifiers.

The regional competition brought together participants from Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, and Iloilo, each accompanied by their respective coaches. Heads and representatives from the Provincial Statistics Offices across the region were also present to oversee and support the event.

The CPU team was coached by College of Engineering faculty members, Mr. Anfernee Joan B. Ng and Engr. Marian Mie A. Alimo-ot, who guided the participants throughout their preparation and training for the competition.

With his victory, Palmes will now represent Region VI – Western Visayas in the National Finals of the 29th Philippine Statistics Quiz.

According to the Facebook page of PSA Region VI Western Visayas, the Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) is a nationwide annual contest organized by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) and the Philippine Statistical Association, Inc. (PSAI) to test the statistical knowledge of college freshmen across the country’s 18 regions. Launched in 1992, the PSQ aims to assess students’ competence in statistics, promote appreciation of the discipline, and raise public awareness of its vital role in national development and planning.
