CPUR Prime Minister Crisfe P. Vergara proves that leadership is not about titles, but about the impact you make—serving with heart, resilience, and a vision for change.
Have you ever thought about what it’s like to be a student leader? Have you ever taken a moment to reflect on the immense responsibility they shoulder, juggling academic demands while leading their peers? Being a student leader means serving as the voice of the student body, addressing their concerns, and tackling challenges to ensure everyone’s needs are met. It involves active listening, problem-solving, and fostering opportunities for growth and connection within the community—often without receiving much recognition.
Crisfe P. Vergara, a fourth-year BS Psychology student, is an active student leader at CPU Republic. She has served as a Board Member and Governor of the College of Arts and Sciences Student Council and currently holds the position of Prime Minister for the 20th Parliament. In addition to her leadership roles, she is also a writer and a dedicated mental health advocate.
“I came from a humble public school at Dingle, Iloilo, and came to Central Philippine University to study psychology to deepen my knowledge and broaden my connections. Bringing only my small dreams, and perseverance, I didn’t expect to be where I am today,” Vergara shared in an online interview.
CPU was not initially Vergara’s first choice for college. However, she is grateful to have become a Centralian, as it has allowed her to meet kind and inspiring individuals, gain profound experiences, and acquire valuable lessons. Her journey at Central has truly been one for the books. She also shared that becoming a Centralian has been a transformative journey, shaped by the meaningful connections she has made, the invaluable lessons she has learned, and the memorable experiences that will stay with her for a lifetime.
“One of the most memorable moments during my time was when I was elected as Prime Minister of the 20th Parliament. After 10 years, a Prime Minister from CAS has been elected and it is an utmost honor for me and a privilege to serve my constituents with that title. Though it is a huge responsibility to bear, I am thankful for everything I have experienced so far -meeting with the distinguished school administrators as we voice out our concerns, mingle with students as we conduct events and programs, sharing the same passion with my fellow student leaders and exchanging ideas for the betterment of the school, and extending service to the community.”
Though the journey has not been a walk in the park, it has certainly been worthwhile for her. The sleepless nights and early mornings have taught her the value of commitment and dedication. The countless meetings focused on improving services for the benefit of students have reminded her of the purpose behind her role.
“And now that my term is coming to an end, I am grateful for the Centralian community for the opportunity to serve in the oldest student governing student council in Southeast Asia.”
When asked how the CPU community supported her growth, she shared that the community has played a key role in shaping her academic and personal development. Collaborating with administrators sharpened her problem-solving skills, while their guidance helped her tackle challenges with poise and tact. Working with students also kept her focused on her mission, reinforcing her advocacy for good governance and ethical leadership.
“Academically, I am deeply thankful to belong to the College of Arts and Sciences – Social Sciences Department, headed by Dr. Darril F. Pamocol. The department has taught me discipline and the values of a real Centralian. Their great teaching has prepared me for the knowledge and critical thinking capabilities needed to be successful in both academics and one’s career. Education with outstanding professors has not only been an honor, but also inspirational in that they encourage me to study with sincerity and enthusiasm. Furthermore, their complete support in extracurricular activities I engaged in facilitated a more richly rewarding, less stressful, and more well-rounded student leadership experience.”
Overall, she believes that CPU’s lessons and values helped mold her into a wiser, more tenacious, communicative, and caring person. The institution not only groomed her for intelligence but also shaped her into a leader who upholds values and serves others. “For that, I am always eternally grateful to the institution.”
To highlight some of her academic achievements at CPU, Crisfe P. Vergara was a dean’s lister from 2021 to 2023, a testament to her commitment to academic excellence. She was also honored to be one of CPU Republic’s delegates to the International Youth for UNESCO 2024 last November in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, where she gained valuable insights into various strategies and programs that promote the Sustainable Development Goals.
“Lastly, during my term as the Governor, the Province of Arts and Sciences Student Council was able to bag its back-to-back Seal of Good Local Governance. A testament to our continuous advocacy for good governance.”
When asked what advice she would give to students considering enrolling at CPU, Vergara shared that her piece of advice would be to remain open—open to new learnings, opportunities, and growth. “CPU is one of the most highly respected institutions in the nation, and being a member of the Centralian community is already an honor.” Reflecting on her own journey, she mentioned that when she first entered college, she swore to live a low-key life focused solely on academics. However, life had other plans, and she was called to something greater because she was open to development and change. She believes that the key is in what you put out—through exposure to new experiences and challenges, she became a better version of herself—more passionate, driven, and purpose-driven.
“To get the most out of this experience, welcome the innumerable opportunities that lie in front of you. Be receptive to challenges that will define you, learning experiences that will expand your horizon, and friendships that will motivate you. CPU is not merely a school— CPU is where character is forged, potential is developed, and values are lifelong,” she remarked.
The journey of CPUR Prime Minister Crisfe P. Vergara, is a testament to the power of leadership, vision, and the unwavering desire to make a difference. Through her work, she has proven that true leadership is not about titles, but about the positive impact one person can have on an entire community.
