Faith, excellence, and integrity define the legacy of leaders shaped by Christian education. Among them is a visionary whose journey from student leader to global spiritual and academic figure exemplifies resilience and commitment to service. As the 18th President of Central Philippine University (CPU), he has made a lasting impact, inspiring generations within and beyond the institution—Rev. Dr. Ernest Howard B. Dagohoy.
Born on September 5, 1961, at Iloilo Mission Hospital, Rev. Dr. Ernest Howard B. Dagohoy was raised in a family deeply committed to education and Christian service. His name was given by American Baptist missionaries, Reverend Howard and Harriet Houston, whom he fondly called “Lolo Howard” and “Lola Harriet.” His mother, entrusted with the Antique Christian Center, dedicated 50 years to early childhood education, while his father served as a public-school principal. Growing up in such an environment instilled in him a passion for learning, leadership, and faith.
Rev. Dr. Dagohoy’s academic journey began at San Jose Pilot Elementary School, where he graduated as class valedictorian in 1974. He continued his education at CPU Development High School, graduating in 1978 with honors and serving as the Corps Commander of the Citizens Army Training Corps. His leadership potential flourished at CPU College of Theology, where he earned his Bachelor of Theology degree in 1988. During his college years, he served as Governor of the College of Theology and was later elected as a Senator of the CPU Republic. However, his path to ministry was not immediate. Initially enrolling in AB Psychology at the University of the Philippines Visayas, he eventually felt a divine calling to return to CPU and pursue theology—a decision that would define his life’s mission. His return to CPU after his initial stint at UP Visayas marked a pivotal moment in his life. “After three and a half years, God called me back to CPU, where I completed my Bachelor of Theology,” he recalls.
Rev. Dr. Dagohoy’s career reflects his deep commitment to both academic and pastoral leadership. He previously served as the University Chaplain of Central Philippine University before expanding his influence internationally. In the United States, he held significant roles, including Senior Pastor at the First Philippine Baptist Church and Adjunct Professor of Theology and Ministry at Houston Christian University. His leadership extended to the Baptist General Convention of Texas, where he became the Area 5 Representative, overseeing nearly 885 churches, universities, and healthcare institutions.
With his extensive experience in theology, ministry, and leadership, he returned to CPU as its 18th President on November 1, 2023. His appointment marked a historic milestone as the first pastor to assume the presidency since the era of American Baptist missionaries. As the fifth Filipino CPU President, Rev. Dr. Ernest Howard B. Dagohoy brings a vision that integrates academic excellence with faith-based leadership, ensuring that CPU continues to shape ethical and competent professionals.
Behind his success is a strong support system—his wife, Dr. Cecile Gonzales Dagohoy, and their daughter, Faith Alexine Dagohoy-Bentulan. Dr. Cecile, a fellow Centralian, is a Senior Business System Analyst at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. She played a vital role in his journey, providing unwavering encouragement and sharing his commitment to service. The couple first met through the Bahandi Singers, a church-based musical group at CPU, further strengthening their bond through faith and ministry.
Their daughter, Faith Alexine, continues the family’s tradition of excellence as a Cardiovascular Nurse at Houston Christian University. Her career reflects the values of compassion, integrity, and dedication—principles deeply embedded in the Dagohoy family.
For Rev. Dr. Dagohoy, CPU is more than just an institution—it is a training ground for servant-leaders. Reflecting on his student years, he fondly recalls Christian Emphasis Week (CEW) as a defining moment in his spiritual journey. “Balancing academics with faith was crucial,” he shares. “CPU prepared me not just intellectually but spiritually, shaping my leadership path.”
His leadership philosophy centers on holistic education, emphasizing the university’s core values of faith, character, stewardship, excellence, and integrity. Under his guidance, CPU continues to empower students with a balanced education grounded in Scientia et Fides—science and faith working together.
As a leader, educator, and pastor, Rev. Dr. Dagohoy encourages future students to choose CPU for its exceptional education and Christian foundation. “The quality of education we offer here is unparalleled,” he affirms. “Our graduates excel globally because CPU instills in them not only knowledge but also character and spiritual grounding.”
He further highlights the importance of integrity, excellence, and faith in shaping responsible professionals. “CPU has trained me well for leadership,” he says. “Whether in the Philippines or on the global stage, Centralians are known for their integrity, hard work, and excellence.”
Rev. Dr. Ernest Howard B. Dagohoy’s life is a testament to the power of faith-driven leadership. From his humble beginnings at CPU to his influential roles in the United States and back to his alma mater as its President, he embodies the university’s mission of producing competent and God-centered professionals. His story inspires generations of Centralians to pursue excellence with a heart for service, proving that with faith and dedication, there are no limits to what one can achieve.
