The Department of Languages, Mass Communication and Humanities (DLMCH) of the College of Arts in Sciences (CAS) in partnership with the Review, Continuing Education and Consultancy Center (RECC) organized a seminar for the retooling of teachers last February 8, 2024, held at Function 1 of Diversion 21 Hotel, Mandurriao, Iloilo City.
The said seminar was organized to enhance and equip the DLMCH teachers with the knowledge and innovative strategies on how to enhance their assessment tools as well as improve their skills in organizing their Specifications (TOS) necessary for the student’s evaluation. In addition, topics on mental health and therapeutic tools for teachers were also discussed.
This whole-day seminar was divided into two parts. The morning session focused on the enhancement of assessment tools and TOS. Dr. Venus Papilota-Diaz, Associate Professor 5, from the College of Arts and Science at West Visayas State University served as the guest speaker.
In her lecture, Dr. Papilota-Diaz, shared her knowledge, expertise as well as experience on how to draft effective assessment tools and how these could contribute to the learning experience of the students. She also emphasized the importance of aligning the learning outcomes when drafting the Table Specifications (TOS) while preparing the assessment tools.
Furthermore, she mentioned that teachers should consider carefully the kind of assessment they will give to their students. One of them, she explained was the so-called “Performance Authentic Task” wherein students can experience tasks and activities in real world context.
During the afternoon session, Prof. Roselyn Hope Fabula-Cabanos, Guidance Associate from the College of Business and Accountancy and the College of Theology at Central Philippine University, was invited as the guest speaker of the said juncture.
Here, Prof. Cabanos discussed the importance of mental health of teachers as well as students. Before the lecture, participants actively joined in activities that were related to mental health check-up.
During her lecture, Prof. Cabanos shared the importance of empathy and how could this contribute to the relationship between teachers and students. Also, she shared therapeutic tools for teachers to use to alleviate and manage their stress.
The said event was concluded by the distribution of certificates to both the speakers and the participants which was assisted by Dr. Annalee L. Cocjin, Chair of the Department of Languages, Mass Communication and Humanities.
Dr. Stella G. Fernandez graced the event with her presence giving her opening message. Furthermore, Dr. Lenny Rose P. Mucho, Director of RECC, introduced the guest speakers for the morning and afternoon sessions.
Prof. Christie Anne D. Ramos, Dr. Marie Melanie J. Javier, and Prof. Jose Luel Sanchez led the invocation, reflection, and closing prayer, respectively.
Prof. Rhys B. Camacho served as the emcee of the said event while Prof. Jarrlyn Law P. Jaco served as the leader.
