Last December 6, 2023 the College of Arts and Sciences of Central Philippine University established a mini-library in Iwa-Macatol Elementary School, located in Brgy. Macatol, Pototan, Iloilo. The activity was in response to the letter of School Principal Ms. Sheree B. Biarneza. According to her, the school has a poor academic performance, some students are non-readers due to lack of instructional materials.

Some CPU colleges, departments and student organizations participated in a book donation activity. The selected students from college of pharmacy, medical science, nursing, engineering; and college of arts and sciences donated books and toys. The Department of Chemistry donated linoleum flooring, the Department of Language Mass Communication and Humanities provided cubicles. Tables, chairs and alphabet mats were sponsored by the Department of Life Sciences and other students’ organizations: CPU Biological Society, CPU Golden Lions Esports, Alpha Phi Omega – Zeta Omicron Chapter, CPU Communication Circle, Junior Social Worker’s Association of the Philippines – CPU Chapter, Association of Political Science and Public Administration Students, Institute of Electronics Engineers of the Philippines – CPU, and the College of Arts and Sciences Provincial Council.

Apart from the activity, BS Biology students conducted story telling with games and feeding activity to Grade 1,2 and 3 pupils of the elementary school. Some parents of the students and elementary school teachers helped to arrange and organize the mini-library.

Further, Dr. Regina E. Samillano, a Science Education Head of the College of Education and Prof. Ann Marie P. Alguidano, a faculty member and Outreach Coordinator of the Department of Chemistry came along also to determine some possible outreach activities in the near future.

The book donation activity was coordinated by Prof. Cherrylyn M. Macairan, faculty member and outreach coordinator of the Department of Life Sciences. The turn-over of the mini-library to the school principal and faculty members of the elementary school led by Dr. Stella Guartero Fernandez College Dean and Outreach Coordinator of the College of Arts and Sciences.
