Last February 21, 2024, at the Alumni Promenade Concert Park, an event titled “Dr. Rex D. Drilon Re-Imagined” was held, serving as a tribute to his legacy and contributions through various artistic expressions, while also being a joint celebration of National Arts Month.

This year, Centralians commemorate the 53rd death anniversary of Dr. Rex Divinagracia Drilon. He served as Central Philippine University’s first Filipino President. Born in Dumangas, Iloilo, on April 21, 1905, Drilon witnessed the establishment of Jaro Industrial School, the precursor to Central Philippine College and later Central Philippine University, in the same year. A distinguished journalist and political scientist known for his strong libertarian and nationalist convictions, Drilon took the prestigious, yet challenging role armed with extensive administrative experience acquired from his previous positions at Central Philippine College and the University of the Philippines. His sudden passing on February 21, 1971, marked a poignant moment in history.

National Arts Month is an annual celebration here in the Philippines held every February to promote and showcase the rich cultural heritage and artistic talents of the Filipino people. The event celebrates the merging of the commemoration of Dr. Drilon’s legacy with the vibrant celebration of Filipino arts and culture. This unique celebration showcases artworks inspired by Dr. Drilon’s life and contributions, alongside creative expressions by Centralian students. Through a fusion of visual arts and exhibits, attendees are invited to explore the intersections of history, creativity, and education. The event serves as a testament to Dr. Drilon’s enduring influence and the ongoing artistic endeavors of the Central Philippine University community, fostering appreciation for both the past and present contributions to Philippine culture.

Participants also enjoyed a photo booth featuring artworks inspired by Dr. Drilon, offering them the opportunity to take memorable photos. Additionally, there were interactive art stations where attendees can create their own artworks using provided materials, which they can also take home after the exhibit. These creations were then showcased alongside other exhibits, fostering creativity and participation in the celebration.

The event seamlessly merged the commemoration of Dr. Drilon’s contributions with the vibrant celebration of National Arts Month, showcasing artistic expressions inspired by his life and values. Through various exhibits, interactive art stations, and creative activities, attendees were able to engage with his legacy while also participating in the rich cultural heritage of the Filipino people. This event served as a fitting testament to Dr. Drilon’s influence and the ongoing artistic endeavors of the Central Philippine University community.
