Centralians donate blood during the Mobile Blood Donation Drive, part of the MedTech Week celebration, organized by the CMLS Student Council and partner organizations.

Last September 16, 2024, Central Philippine University College of Medical Laboratory Science (CPU – CMLS) launched MedTech Week with a meaningful initiative: a Mobile Blood Donation Drive in partnership with the WVRBC and PRC Iloilo Chapter. Held at the Alumni Promenade Concert Park, the event was organized by the CMLS Provincial Student Council and two student organizations, the Medical Laboratory Science Internship Organization and the Medical Laboratory Science Society.

Despite the rainy weather, the event garnered 40 volunteers, resulting in 24 successful blood donors. “We are more than satisfied with the turnout, considering the challenges posed by the weather,” Garcia added. Each successful donation is set to benefit those in need of life-saving blood transfusions, embodying the spirit of volunteerism that the CPU community is known for.

During the planning and execution of the event, the organizers faced multiple hurdles. “The Bar Exam just before the event and prelim exams the week after made the timing challenging, especially considering everyone’s hectic schedules,” shared Garcia. Despite these logistical difficulties, the collaboration between CMLS and its partners helped ensure the event’s success.

Safety and comfort were top priorities. Before donating, volunteers underwent comprehensive health screenings, including vitals checks and lifestyle interviews to ensure they were fit to donate. “We also provided water and food to the donors before and after the process, ensuring their recovery,” said Garcia.

Feedback from first-time donors reflected the positive impact of the event. “The stigma around blood donation being painful or scary lessened that day,” Garcia remarked. Many of the new donors realized that donating blood is not only a noble act but also a straightforward and safe process.

Partnerships with WVRBC and PRC Iloilo Chapter were instrumental in the event’s success. “Without these organizations, the event wouldn’t have been possible. Each group contributed something unique,” Garcia emphasized.

CPU CMLS has no plans of slowing down. “As aspiring healthcare workers, we are committed to organizing similar events in the future, possibly expanding our efforts beyond CPU,” Garcia revealed. He also shared a lighthearted lesson learned: “Next time, we’ll make sure it’s not on a rainy day,” he joked.

Ultimately, the event showcased the CPU community’s unwavering commitment to making a difference. The successful blood donation drives not only served as a reminder of the importance of blood donation but also as an ideal way to celebrate the start of MedTech Week.
