The vibrant atmosphere of the Henry Luce III Building at Central Philippine University (CPU) buzzed with excitement on September 26, 2024, as aspiring entrepreneurs gathered for the inaugural Western Visayas Student Startup Summit 2024. Organized by UMWAD Western Visayas and CPUGAD TBI, the event, themed “Bridging Ideas and Opportunities for a Thriving Startup Ecosystem,” provided a dynamic platform for innovation and collaboration among the youth
Rev. Dr. Ernest Howard B. Dagohoy, University President, warmly welcomed attendees, emphasizing the significance of entrepreneurship in today’s fast-paced world. He acknowledged key figures in the startup ecosystem, including Carmelo V. Ambut, Executive Director of UMWAD, and Engineer Gelvie Lagos of CPUGAD TBI. Dr. Dagohoy encouraged participants to embrace their potential to make meaningful contributions to their communities, reminding them of their purpose through a verse from Colossians 3:23-24.
The morning session featured several insightful talks, beginning with a message from Ms. Keithlyn Sarah Bernardino, Supervising Science Research Specialist of DOST VI. Following her, Ms. Karla Legaspi from QBO Innovation Hub introduced the fundamentals of startups, emphasizing problem-solving as the heart of innovation. She encouraged attendees to focus on meaningful problems rather than complex technologies, sharing examples from successful local startups.

Inspirational talks continued with Ms. Alyssa Casandra W. Wee, COO and Co-Founder of Dormy PH, and Mr. Jed Mathew P. Mamosto, CEO and Co-Founder of UniHub. Both young entrepreneurs shared their journeys, highlighting the importance of soft skills, adaptability, and perseverance in the entrepreneurial landscape. Their stories served as powerful motivators for students, proving that age and background should not deter one from pursuing innovative ideas.
The summit also included interactive sessions where student leaders engaged in discussions about leadership and innovation. Moderated by Mr. John Joseph Tabladillo from UMWAD WV, the panel featured student tech leaders who shared insights on shaping the technological landscape within their communities.
The afternoon session shifted focus to collaboration, where participants engaged in a Startup Idea Generation activity. Teams were formed to brainstorm and pitch innovative startup concepts, with guidance from a panel of experts. This hands-on approach aimed to inspire creativity and foster teamwork among budding entrepreneurs.
As the event drew to a close, the much-anticipated startup idea pitching competition showcased the impressive talent and creativity of participants. The panel faced the challenging task of selecting the top three winners, whose innovative solutions highlighted the potential for meaningful impact.
Engr. Gelvie L. Lagos delivered the closing remarks, expressing his admiration for the young innovators present. He underscored the importance of teamwork, perseverance, and environmental consciousness, encouraging participants to continue pursuing their entrepreneurial dreams.
The Western Visayas Student Startup Summit 2024 successfully provided a platform for students to connect, learn, and ignite their entrepreneurial journeys, fostering a thriving startup ecosystem in the region.
