By Keziah G. Huelar

Dr. Lenwood Edge Building is home to the CPU College of Agriculture, Resources & Environmental Sciences (CARES).

Excellence and discipline—The Professional Regulation Commission hailed the Central Philippine University College of Agriculture Resources and Environmental Sciences (CARES) for placing 10th in the roll of top performing schools with the highest agriculturist licensure exam passing rates during the last four agriculturist exams in June 2015, October 2016, April 2017 and November 2017.

The said list, published by PRC on their website, shows a table of the summarized board exam performance of several colleges and universities offering agriculture as an academic degree. On the said list, CPU ranked 10th out of the 40 top performing schools with a passing rate of 63%. The CPU College of Agriculture is one of the only two schools in Western Visayas to be included in the top 10, the other university being West Visayas State University which placed 39th.

In the Commission on Higher Education Regional Office VI Memorandum No. 001, Series of 2016, the college was named as a Center for Excellence. CHED gives such distinction to academic institutions that pursue curriculums that are at par with ASEAN and international benchmarks and standards and enhance the quality of instruction through faculty development and upgrading of facilities, equipment, and library holdings.

The CPU College of Agriculture was the first agricultural college to be recognized outside of Luzon. Established in 1951 by Dr. Burl Alba Slocum, its first dean, the college started off with 41 students and 3 faculty members.

In 1954, the college produced its first fruit, 4 Bachelor of Science in Agriculture graduates. Now, the college has had 10,000+ graduates. It now offers Bachelor of Science in Agriculture with majors in Agribusiness, Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Education, Animal Science, and Ornamental Horticulture, Bachelor of Science in Environmental Management and Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineering.

The CPU College of Agriculture continues to soar high by producing quality and competitive graduates that have helped shape the agricultural industry here and abroad. The college is currently being led by its dynamic Dean, Dr. Jaime Cabarles, Jr.
